That Is Interesting
United States
Приєднався 23 бер 2018
My name is Carter and welcome to That Is Interesting. I believe that geography shapes the world we call home, that how people interact with the land they live in impacts their history, culture, politics, economics, and society. The world is a truly beautiful and fascinating place. Every little corner of it is interesting and unique in its own way. If you like maps, flags, enjoy learning about history, if you want to understand what truly makes a place - whether a town, city, region, state, or country, unique - this is the channel for you. It’s a geography channel in the sense that geography is key to understanding a place and what makes it tick. I make longer form videos with a specific focus on my home country, the United States. I’m probably best known for The US Explained, an ongoing 56-part series that takes a deep dive into every state, territory, and federal district that make up the United States. If any of this sounds interesting to you, subscribe and join me on this journey!
The Problem with how we Measure Cities...
The ways city populations are measured in the US and around the world are anything but straightforward, and can lead to some pretty different results. Tired of all the arguing over how big your city really is? Do you hear words like "metro area" and "city proper" get thrown around and want to finally understand what they mean? Lucky for you, I've made this primer on the three main methods for classifying urban settlement. After you're done watching, leave a comment and let me know which you prefer!

Missouri - The US Explained
Переглядів 129 тис.3 місяці тому
Missouri sits in the middle. For the last forty years, it’s been the average center of the country’s population, and today, more than any other, it can claim to be the state where the north meets the south, and the east meets the west. Roughly halfway between the Rockies and the Appalachians, the Canadian border and the Gulf of Mexico, home to flat expanses of farmland, the forested mountains, ...

Alabama - The US Explained
Переглядів 234 тис.9 місяців тому
The story of Alabama is in large part the story of America, one that has much to be proud of, with progress and innovation, kind people and a strong regional culture, yet at the same time one that has also been marked by violence, prejudice, poverty, and conflict. Above all it’s a story that is essential to understand. Home to forests and farmland, mountains and beaches, small towns and a numbe...

Jane Pauley is also an Indiana native.
Let's not forget the crime ridden City of Baltimore!
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent still-motion photography pictures/drawings. Enabling viewers to better understand what the orator is describing-!!!😉 Since the diabolically incompetent steel unions wouldn't make a few concessions. Japan took over that industry & produced a better steel product-!!!😳
Leave me alone e my life is mine not yours or
Leave me alone Allison’s
I think alabama had one of the first subs as well theres a stiry about them going out three times and it sinking each time to layer be brought back up and retried after clearing the drowned.
If i were a politician i would do everything in my power to improve Alabama. I'd love to see a thriving wealthy Alabama once in my life. For it to be the beating heart of Dixie. For it to be considered the best state in the south, but I'm not sure that'll ever happen
Actually “the palmetto” Sabal palmetto aka Cabbage Palmetto IS a species of palm or “palm tree” (palms are not actual trees). It may not be the typical feather leaf tropical coconut palm most people imagine when they think palm but a species of palm nonetheless. One of several native to the Southern US. Here in Mississippi we have 4 native palm species including Sabal palmetto which are Dwarf palmetto (Sabal minor), Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), and Needle palm (Rapidophyllum hystrix). These are the most cold tolerant palms in the world. Particularly Needle palm and Dwarf palmetto which range all the way up into the Southern counties of North Mississippi. Love the Content!!
10:54 It is June 2024, I would take that number with a grain of salt. Much higher now.
The Quabbin isn’t “natural” per se. it’s man made for Boston metro area, but 4 towns and portions of other towns were taken for the water shed.
I'm Norwegian decent in North Dakota. I own my great grandparents original homestead 40 acres.
Where I live in Indiana I've never seen it above -10 in the average is about like maybe 25
Louisville had close to 200 homicides last year...
Dude. That's not Cincinnati chili without a big pile of shredded cheese on top, oyster crackers and preferably a load of hot sauce. Skyline ads always show a pile of artery clogging cheese on top of the chili dish and the coneys.
As a Mainer, I gotta say this video is very well done - accurate and interesting information. Other important Maine info would be the state’s dominance in the granite industry in the 19th century/20th century (and the immigrants from Scotland, Sweden & Italy that played a huge role); also, all the incredible American artists that helped shape Maine’s identity 🖼️ 🌊
I knew you had to live here when I heard you pronounce the town names and then when you said you lived in Pittsburgh I realized why all the photos you chose of of reading, allentown, cheesesteaks, wawas etc all sucked compared to your photos of pittsburgh and sheetsz etc hahaha. great video!!
First inhabited by the illegitimate children of Kentucky and Ohio, Indiana became known as the Hoosier state because everyone would greet one another by saying “Who’s your Daddy?”
Missouri is US longest river not the Mississippi
💚
Beautiful and fun‼️
I really love these kinds of videos. They're so informative and improves old standing reasons and understandings replacing them or inserting new insights, as well as helping to layer the complexities into whole comprehension of multiple and/or contrasting attributes. Yessir I'm good with the whole package right up to when you have to bring up the topic regarding our horrifying history or effect of capitalism and its systems. Only as a result from other valuable videos similar to this one finding out more disgusting facts about the relationship and overt prejudice for Big Business over labor. Always a cramp in the craw I have to struggle through this part as spent almost my entire adult life in the trenches a part of that struggle. How management continues to influence beliefs while continuing to rip off the whole population, except the one percent, its too cringeworthy for me haplessly retired = out of the fight. I digressed, sorry. Loved the video. 😉
When the England people bought slaves they gave their last names to the slaves. I hope mine is not change...😂😂😂
I wish he talked about the never-ending underground fire of Centralia
Really, 30 minutes for this?
British is significantly underrepresented in the US statistics. Which makes sense when you think about it. English Americans were simply viewed as Americans. While for example, the Germans, Irish and Italians were viewed as being different, the minority. So many of the today's Americans who might have the highest concentration of British/English DNA are often not even aware of it and even those who are aware of it often identify themselves with one of their other ethnicity's.
I've subscribed for all 50 states. When you have time, a state by state tourist guide would also be great, both for US citizens and fir foreigners to discover.
It's Mainin Time
Fun fact. There’s more Advil sold in “Joisey” than anywhere else in the world.🌎
I believe that in fact some of the Portuguese did make it to Maine, as I am part Portuguese and a live in Maine. I also know several other people here who are descended from Portuguese people, so it would look to be the case.
Missouri is one of my favorite states. I love visiting this beautiful state a few times a year.
Just visited Louisiana in February. Cool people out there. Even the G’s were polite. That southern hospitality is real. Slow ass service tho. Be prepared for that
I know I'm going to sound nitpicky here, but please, it's "cities proper" not "city propers."
McKeesport!!
The reason for the Atchafalaya taking dominance Is a bit more complicated. Referring the the erosion upstream and the changing course of the rivers, is good and proper. But the change to the Atchafalya is because of the silt load coming downstream from those river bend erosions,, this is where the silt goes and what it does. The silt is infilling the Mississippi. raising the bed of the river . The natural course of events is the current channel,, lowing past New Orleans, is filling up, silt is raising the bottom and slowing the current,, which drops even more silt,, which raises the bottom and top of the river even further. The Atchafalaya is the steeper faster and shorter route to the sea. Over the thousands of years, the mouth of the river into the Gulf or Mexico has changed many times,, and is trying to change again,, and now.
Great video. Perhaps you should’ve mentioned Jesse James and other cowboy lore.
I live in the north suburbs of Chicago and the area is very beautiful. Love chi town
That would put an additional 8 southern seats in the Senate. That would drastically reduce the quality of United states
Now they all want to come back once their fancy desert cities and golf courses dry up OR Florida submerges underwater in 50 years.
Virginia is the most screwed by this discrepancy. Richmond’s metro area is roughly the size of a city like OKC…but Virginia won’t let Richmond have that population.
Hey I live there
Norman, Oklahoma has a pretty nice flag
The "yellow" color in the flag is actually called " buff" and reflects New Jersey's revolutionary war soldier"s uniforms, which were blue and buff.
My land, my people, my home, and my commonwealth!
I mean Greenland will most likely gain independence and Canada and the USA Have Close Ties so Canada might join the US in a union which will finally put the plan together minus Greenland and Iceland. But all of this is 50/50 because I mean Canada and the US are basically best friends due to their trade and diplomatic relations. This video is the best American dream I've heard.
T
the problem I see in Pennsylvania is North to South freeways especial in central are!
Ok this is very very odd but that photo of downtown St Charles really really ****really**** looks like my wife and I walking. all the way down to the grey Hey Dudes shoes.. lol.
29:14 time on the video. Why is his image Caucasian mostly on google instead of this image that just pops up African
Great video! However, I don’t think that picture is from UMaine Orono
This author is a moron. The Civil War was a conflict about individual states rights. After losing the war for three years the North was ready to call it quits. Then the emotional idea of slavery was used for support of the northern war of aggression.
